Daily disposable contact lenses
In recent years the biggest innovation by far has been the introduction of daily disposable contact lenses which means, amongst other things, that you no longer need to maintain a miniature science laboratory in your bathroom!
As the term suggests, daily disposable lenses are renewed daily. All that is required of you is to insert new lenses in the morning and then dispose of them in the evening. It really is as simple as that. Daily disposable lenses also give you more freedom to pick and choose which days you wear contact lenses and which days you wear spectacles.
Furthermore, the very latest, thin lenses all but eliminate the need to gradually build up "wearing time", enabling wearers to reach full wearing time almost immediately*.
Disposal lenses are available for replacement on two weekly and monthly schedules, and come complete with all solutions and after care pre-paid. We can also supply continuous wear lenses that are worn for up to 30 days and nights.
Disposable lenses are available in most prescriptions and if you would like to try them, please talk with us about a no-obligation trial.
*The appropriate wearing time as recommended by your contact lens practitioner must always be adhered to. Over wearing of lenses can result in injury to the eye.
Soft lenses
Soft (or Hydrophilic) lenses have a high water content and so allow oxygen to be transmitted to the cornea, increasing wearing time and making the lens more comfortable. Some very high water content lenses now available allow even greater or extended wearing times. Certain forms of soft lenses are available on 'frequent replacement plans' where new lenses are supplied on a monthly, 3 monthly or 6 monthly basis. As these lenses are re-worn (unlike daily disposable lenses) they must be cleaned and disinfected daily.
Hard lenses
Hard or rigid lenses are made of a hard, relatively inflexible, plastics material which does not allow oxygen to be transmitted. This leads to comparatively short wearing periods. Hard lenses were the first in common usage and they can often deliver very sharp vision, although their shorter wearing times and lack of comfort mean they are rarely prescribed nowadays. As these lenses are re-worn they must be cleaned and disinfected daily.
Gas permeable lenses
Gas Permeable lenses are still made of a rigid material but its structure allows oxygen to pass through and, therefore, they are more comfortable than standard hard lenses with increased wearing times. As these lenses are re-worn they must be cleaned and disinfected daily.
