Free eye examination entitlement

If you are in any of the categories below, you may be entitled to receive partial or full support with the cost of eye examinations, and if required, spectacles or contact lenses. Please contact us for details.

We would advise all NHS patients to consider extending the scope of the Sight Test to include more advanced assessments such as digital retinal photography. Such procedures allow earlier and more accurate diagnosis of many eye diseases and changes can be observed and tracked over time.

• Children under 16
• Full time students aged 16, 17 and 18
• People aged 60 and over
• People registered blind or partially sighted
• People with diabetes
• People with or 'at risk' of glaucoma
• People over 40 with a close relative with or 'at risk' of glaucoma
• People with complex prescriptions
• People claiming income support, certain other benefits and tax credits and their dependants
• People with an exemption certificate HC2
• If you are claiming exemption from NHS charges we are now required to ask to see evidence of your entitlement
