Dyslexia

Duffy Optometrists are one of only a hundred or so practices nationwide equipped with an Intuitive Colorimeter for prescribing the precision tinted filters often helpful for students with specific reading difficulties, dyslexia or dysgraphia.

What is Dyslexia?

Vision and Learning Assessment

This is an in depth assessment of binocular vision and visual perceptual anomalies often problematic for the dyslexic student, and includes screening for the benefit of colour.

Migraine & Colour Therapy

Recent research by Prof. Arnold Wilkins at the University of Essex has demonstrated that individually prescribed, precision tinted lenses can reduce the Visual Stress which is sometimes a trigger for Migraine and photosensitive Epilepsy. We can assess for visual stress and pattern glare and prescribe suitable tints to relieve these problems.

Dry Eye

A common problem where either too few, or poor quality, tears are produced. This condition can lead to symptoms varying from a mild itch to intense discomfort and watery eyes. Investigation and advice are available including therapy with Punctum Plugs, invisible devices designed to help retain tears on the eye surface.

Ocular Photography

The use of our digital fundus camera allows us to photograph the retina at the back of the eye. The process is quick and easy, and most people will not even need eyedrops. A photograph of your eye allow early detection of abnormality or disease, and provides a permanent record for early detection of subsequent change.

Vision Therapy

Sometimes binocular vision and focussing problems can be corrected by exercises instead of spectacles. Eye exercises can often be done at home with simple, inexpensive equipment. We will discuss these options with you should they be appropriate.

Some evidence is available that progressive myopia can be controlled by the use of varifocal or contact lenses. We are happy to discuss these theories.

Low Vision Services

For those people who cannot achieve a satisfactory standard of vision with ordinary spectacles we have a wide range of low vision aids available, and can advise on the most appropriate to use.

Diabetic Retinopathy Screening

The diabetic eye is vulnerable to many complications and maybe more prone to glaucoma. Regular check can detect these eye conditions at a time when treatment is affective, but before symptoms have developed. These tests require drops to dilate the pupils so should not be done before driving.

Home Visits

We regularly provide eyecare to the housebound or those who live in residential or nursing care. Not being able to attend the practice does not mean that you need to neglect your vision in fact your eyesight is probably more precious.

Driver's Vision Assessment

We are recognised as a centre for DVLA assessment of vision and visual field for drivers.

Emergencies

We always have emergency appointments available should you have a sudden change in vision, sore, red eyes, or a foreign body. Our specialised equipment means we can quickly and accurately assess the problem. Even if you have simply broken your specs, we will do all we can to help.

Laser Surgery

We are familiar with the latest procedures available in the field of surgical refractive correction and can give impartial advice about your suitability and possible outcomes. We also provide post-surgical aftercare examinations referred by Optimax.
